How many credit cards can you have?

Last updated: 20 May 2026

Short answer. There is no formal limit to how many credit cards you can have in Norway. In practice the credit assessment limits it: all available credit is recorded in Gjeldsregisteret, and a high total credit limit can make it harder to get new cards, loans or a mortgage. For most people one or two cards covering their needs is enough.

When you apply for a new card, the issuer counts your existing credit limits, not just what you actually owe. With three cards at NOK 100,000 each, you are assessed as if you could draw NOK 300,000, even if the balance is zero.

This matters most for mortgages. The bank includes available credit in your debt ratio. Many unused cards can therefore get in the way when buying a home, and it can pay to cancel cards you do not use.

A sensible setup for most people is one card covering the main use, for example Bank Norwegian for travel or Morrow Bank for online shopping, possibly a second low-rate card such as Instabank for larger purchases you spread out. More than that rarely adds value.
